CHRYSLER JEEP DETROIT APBA GOLD CUP July 8-11, 1999
*** SATURDAY
Today was mostly sunny with a stiff breeze at times, but the
wind wasn't going upriver like Friday and did not affect the
water conditions. A FULL & GREAT day of racing was had by all!
*** TODAYS RESULTS
For the Unlimited and Unlimited Light heat results, please let
me direct you to http://www.hydros.org/results.htm for the
"Cindy & Chuck" report. Thanks to them for a GREAT job! The
scoring summaries for all classes should be in tomorrow, and
I'll post them in an SFO as soon as possible.
*** DRIVERS-ONLY MEETING
After heat 2B there was a "drivers only" meeting - no owners, no
crew! The Bud camp would only say "this was a very serious
conversation", and the grapevine says it was about the near
incidents in the heat. The overhead camera shots will be
interesting indeed!
Dave either made a very skilled turn in lane 2 or infringed on
PICO in lane 1, but Dave's roostertail obscured PICO from my
view for the judgement moment. Personally I think he gave the
requisite footage, but that's only ten feet between boats and
in real battle, 10 feet is nothing. Chip may have been forced
to check up just to be sure he didn't collide. Playing your
cards and forcing the other guy to his minimum legal hole on a
pass is GREAT RACING, so this remains a continuing story.
In another incident, Bud rode up someone's roostertail and as
the rumor mill has it, her starboard sponson was very high.
Those at the DYC had a good view of the incident, but
this too was obscured to us in the Dodge Pits by flying water.
Thirdly, the 2B pre-race incident. While milling about the
course for lane position, it appeared to me that Dave made a
false shortcut to get Chip to make his shortcut, then Dave did
his real mill. This forced Chip to make the next move and in
doing so, he took water from Dave and was fortunate to get back
on plane.
Real decisions on all 3 depend on the overhead video.
*** IF THE PITS LOOK LIKE ONE END IS SINKING ON SUNDAY
Don't worry, it's just because all the guys in the pits are at
the Chrysler Jeep (U-2) Pit Area to visit Amy Hayes - "Miss
Swimwear Illustrated 1999". We will return to level when she
leaves. The press release says she's available for interviews -
I'm wondering what she wants to ask me!
