CHRYSLER JEEP DETROIT APBA GOLD CUP July 8-11, 1999
*** 5-LITERS ADDED TO THE LINE-UP!
We are pleased to welcome the 5-Liter Hydroplanes to the Spirit
of Detroit Thunderfest & Chrysler/Jeep Detroit "APBA Gold Cup"
event! They are one of the most competitive classes in the APBA.
Detroit will host the 5-Liter North American Championship for
the first time ever. Plans indicate approximately 15(!) boats
will be here in Detroit ready to race. 5-Liter Hydroplanes top
out at speeds in excess of 120 mph down the straightaway.
These race boats are powered by "305" Chevrolet engines with
2-barrel carburetors.
*** NO GRAND PRIX CLASS IN 1999
Sorry to confirm the news... you won't miss them more than
myself. Our recent change to the July race date puts our event
on a weekend between two big GP events in Canada. [Ed note: I
think this increased team expenses and that we could not land
additional sponsorship funds to compensate. Here's hoping for
next year.]
*** WELCOME BACK CHIP! (HANAUER TO DRIVE MISS PICO!)
As previously reported here, Chip Hanauer is making his return
in the PICO Unlimited. Testing during April (in Washington)
went very well. Chip is the maestro, and it will be very
interesting to see him racing against his last team! (Bud)
*** MARK WEBER SAYS
Mark will be driving for Kim Gregory, owner of the U-10 'Wild
FIRE' boat). He recently spoke at an Unlimiteds Detroit meeting
and stated firmly: "We are commited to Mr Villwock [Bud driver]
and Mr Hanauer".
