CHRYSLER JEEP DETROIT APBA GOLD CUP July 9-12, 1998 Monday July 13th Thanks to Mark Weber for this report: Steve was injured when the escape hatch blew in on him at the start / finish line at the start of the 3rd lap. Anyway, Steve is sore but OK today. His legs and shoulder are bruised but he will be ready for Norfolk. A stronger safety hatch will be installed. I was able to listen to the media interview with Dave Villwock after the race. I took a few notes and will try to remain faithful to the comments he made in response to reporter questions: - Our team really focused and came together to make this happen. - Boat racing... all of motor sports... is about team unity, community and relationships... trust. We did a lot of work on that over the winter. As we changed the team around some, the team dynamic changed. We added two new members so they had to work hard. - My first Gold Cup in PICO 2 years ago was great and my second last year in the Miss Budweiser was better, but this one is the best. - The water was getting rough in the far turn for the final... I saw other guys having a tough time in the first turn. - We did make some sponson repairs after the 3rd heat... a little dent. In response to a question "Was there blue paint?", Dave said: That was just close racing, Mark and I race hard. It was unfortunate that he didn't get there [the final heat].
