*** THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT HELPED MAKE THE 2002 RACE A REALITY

Spirit Of Detroit Thunderfest would like to thank our volunteers for all the hard work and long hours it took to present the 2002 Gold Cup event. SODT and the volunteers together would like to thank everyone else that contributed - our fans, sponsors, vendors, the City of Detroit, the teams, as well as anyone I may have missed.

*** FINISH/START PARTY FOR THE VOLUNTEERS - THURSDAY OCT 10TH

That's right! The long-awaited Finish/Start party has been scheduled for Thursday October 10th at 6:00pm. The party will be held at Jack's Waterfront Restaurant located at the Emerald City Marina at 24214 Jefferson Avenue - St. Clair Shores MI - (586) 445-8080. The Emerald Marina is about halfway between 9 and 10 Mile Roads ... follow their drive to the end to find Jack's. Buffet dinner, cash bar. 2003 dues will be collected.

*** THE RACE DATE HAS BEEN SET FOR NEXT YEAR: JUNE 19-22 2003

The race date for 2003 has been set as June 19th-22nd. I expect this date to hold unless an unforseen conflict arises.

SODT has been considering this change for a couple years now. The second weekend in July has a number of local conflicts, the biggest being that this is when some of the auto makers and suppliers do their annual changeover. This means that many of their employees are on vacation (or busy with the changeover), and many vendors and clients are out of town. Understandably, these companies are reluctant to sponsor an event when they are unable to use it for corporate entertainment. Those that aren't included in the entertainment are a huge part of our target audience.

*** SODT THUNDERFEST IS REORGANIZING THIS FALL

SODT has announced that Phil Linsalata will be the interim President during SODT re-organization. He's a long-time local fan as well as a Detroit based businessman, and very motivated.

Note that our offices are closed until January. The process of ticket sales is under review, and I don't believe any will be sold before 2003. I expect that premium ticket-holders like Commodore Club, Judges Stand, etc will be notified by mail before they go on public sale, giving you first chance as usual.

In the meantime you can always contact us via email - please reference our home page for the current email address.

*** NEWS FROM SAN DIEGO - MIKE HANSON WINS, EVANS/COOPER IN 3RD!

SODT would like to congratulate Mike Hanson and the Jones Racing Team for their win in San Diego! We would also like to offer a round of congratulations to Mitch Evans and the whole Cooper team of the piston-powered U-3 Vacationville.com for their *outstanding* performance with the new hull ... not only was the U-3 the top qualifier at 160.370 MPH, they won Heat 3A and led the final heat for nearly 3 laps. Wow!

Details on the Budweiser Bill Muncey Cup - Chuck Moore/HydroProp

What a great race this year! For quite some time it looked like the U-3 Vacationville.com had the race wrapped up. Mitch Evans and the U-3 jumped to the early lead. Though challenged by Mike Hanson in the U-9 Sun Harbor Mortgage, Evans appeared to have the power to hold off the early challengers. It wasn't until the second turn of lap three that Hanson's U-9 was able to overtake the piston powered U-3. Evans appeared to catch some water while dueling with the U-9 and the U-16. This took the hull off the lead pace and put him back from the front runners. At this point, Mike Hanson's U-9 Sun Harbor Mortgage seemed to simply come alive and pull away from the pack. Nate Brown's U-16 Miss Elam Plus would challenge but could not over take Hanson. Mark Tate and Dave Villwock appeared to get bad starts and were back from the lead pace. From start to finish, it was an exciting final here in San Diego.

Final Results of the Budweiser Bill Muncey Cup

1st - U-9 Sun Harbor Mortgage
2nd - U-16 Miss Elam Plus
3rd - U-3 Vacationville.com
4th - U-2 Miss Trendwest
5th - U-1 Miss Budweiser
6th - U-25 Superior Racing Team
7th - U-10 Miss EMCOR

*** RADIO CONTROL POWERBOAT RACING IN OAKLAND COUNTY THIS SUNDAY

The Oakland Wolverine Model Boat Club will have their annual radio control powerboat race at Spencer Park in Rochester Hills Michigan. Besides the Gold Cup 1/8th scale hydro class and the smaller Sport 40's, there will be many other classes of outrigger and displacement hull racing. It's a lot of fun to see these boats race - thrills & spills just like the big boats!

Sunday September 29th all day. They get started about 9am and end somewhere between 4 and 7. Spencer Park is on John R. just North of M-59 and there is a nominal parking fee. Note that John R. is between the Dequindre and Rochester Road exits off M-59. Ask the gatekeeper how to get through to the boat racing parking area.
