DETROIT (AP)---Mark Weber, St. Clair Shores, Mich., was just getting revved up to be the fastest qualifier for the Chrysler Jeep APBA Gold Cup. Just then, misfortune raised its ugly head. Weber's boat threw a blade of the propeller, wreaking havoc on the craft on its final qualifying attempt, knocking the U-15 Emcor presents the Detroiit Yacht Club out of the Gold Cup. "We threw an ear off the propeller, and the shaft then goes out of balance, pushing it upwards toward the gearbox," said Weber. "The crew is tired and we have major damage to the boat." Dave Villwock, Seattle, Wash., in the Miss Budweiser created the battle for the top qualifying slot when he pushed the Miss Budweiser to a two-lap leading average of 154.135 mph, edging Mike Hanson, Kent, Wash., in the U-9 Tubby's Grilled Submarine boat. Hanson had the best time of the day until Villwock took the spot away, creating another opportunity for Weber to grab the top spot. But Weber had the problem in turn four on his warm up lap. "We had something special going with this boat," added Weber. "Now, we'll have to use the other boat and that is not a bad boat, but we had something going with the other boat."
With the U-15 out of the race, ten boats will now compete for the Gold Cup championship this weekend. Weber's misfortune now knocks his brother Mike out of the cockpit as Mark will drive the second team boat, the U-10, Shelby Enterprises presents the Miss DYC. On Friday night, Dave Bender, El Dorado, Calif., won his first Automotive Powered Gold Cup Friday in the Miss Security Race Products, averaging 84.306 mph.
