CHRYSLER JEEP DETROIT APBA GOLD CUP July 12-15, 2001
*** AN EXCELLENT ARTICLE ABOUT GAR WOOD IN THE DETROIT NEWS
From Jerry Green and The Detroit News:
The Detroit News web page includes a wonderful photo of Gar:
*** EVANSVILLE RESULTS
The Hydros visited Evansville Indiana on June 30th and July 1st,
and the winner was .... Dave Villwock in the Miss Budweiser.
Second went to Mike Hanson in the U-9 Miss WABX, third to Greg
Hopp in Miss Znetix, fourth to Detroiter Mark Weber in the U-10
Emcor, and fifth to Detroiter Jimmy King in the U-8 Llumar
Window Film.
New rules for 2001 intended to increase the competition seem to
have had some good effect, reports are that the racing was much
closer. Mike Hanson was the top qualifier at 154.179, thus
ending Miss Budweiser's streak of being the top qualifier in
28 consecutive Hydroplane races.
By all accounts, the U-9 is faaast this year!
*** MADISON RACE THIS WEEKEND
As this newsletter is being sent, race teams are in the pits for
the annual Madison Indiana race on the Ohio River. Tune to
www.worxradio.com this weekend for some of the best hydro
coverage on the net. I'm telling you ... don't miss it!
*** ONE RACER ALREADY OUT OF THE RUNNING
Detroiter Jerry Bell's Unlimited Light hydroplane was destroyed
by an arsonist a couple weeks ago. This was his 'new' boat, and
he was getting it ready to achieve his life-long dream of racing
on the Detroit River at the Gold Cup event.
Best of luck Jerry ... we'll be looking for you in 2002.

*** NEW SPECTATOR ACTIVITIES IN WATERWORKS AND WATERWORKS ANNEX
New activities include a Battle Of The Bands and a Pro Beach
Volleyball exhibition ...
Eight or more bands will be playing a variety of musical styles
Thursday through Sunday for bragging rights.
The Volleyball exhibition will include top-ranked touring
professionals. Eliminations will be held on Saturday, and four
semi and final matches will be held on Sunday.
There will also be a Mopar Classic Car Show in Waterworks Annex,
with up to 50 great cars to check out.
*** CHIP HANAUER - ROOKIE RACER AGAIN
Chip Hanauer's yearning for competition and fun just won't stop!
One year after his "retirement" from Unlimiteds, he's racing
go-karts with the Puget Sound Go-Karting Association.
More info on the Seattle P-I pages:
"It's funny, a lot of people have come up to me and said, 'You
look a lot like that boat racer'" Hanauer said with a good
natured laugh. "I just tell them 'Yeah, I get that a lot.'"
*** STATUS REPORT OF THE 'MADISON' MOVIE BY DAVID WILLIAMS
I've been working on the Madison movie one way or another since
the summer of 1993. It is a slow and frustrating project that
moves at a blistering pace for a few weeks and then there are
months and months on inaction.
The movie does have a distributor. The name of the company
cannot be released yet. The movie was set for an Oct 12th
opening in about 2000 theaters nation wide. However in a
"good news bad news" situation, we have learned the Madison
star Jim Caviezel has another movie, the major studio release
"Count of Monte Cristo" scheduled to also open on Oct 12. It is
not a good idea to open two movies with the same star on the
same weekend. That tends to split the potential audience, so a
decision has been made to hold Madison until after "The Count of
Monte Cristo" opens (maybe in spring 2002). If the "Count" is a
good as the previews say, it should really be a boost to "our" movie.
When the movie is released, there is supposed to be a
$15,000,000 promotional campaign to announce it, so . . . when
the distributor wants us all to know more, we will all know
about it. Until then, please be patient and keep waiting.
