Unlimited Lights Heat 2B
Another good battle up front, this one for the last 2 laps ... from my vantage point it looked like
The Beach Grill was first, then Village Idiot, Roostertail, Sindbad's and Tom's Oyster Bar. First
and second were too close to call from here.

[07/14/01 14:45] : By Brian Reed
Unlimited Lights Heat 2A
Miss CompAir (UL-110) and Happy Go Lucky (UL-15) went for three laps side by side ... wow! I think it was Happy Go Lucky taking the win, but they went an extra lap. Maybe it was a victory lap, or they weren't sure if there was a call on them.

Well, we think Znetix (Greg Hopp) won this one, but there were penalties too, so we'll get the official results posted when we get them.

[07/14/01 13:17] : By Brian Reed
HEAT 1A
First place to Miss Budweiser, but the real story was the U-10 which stayed with him for the duration. It seemed like Mark had the top end speed on the backstretch but would lose a little time in the Roostertail turn.

MORE BAD LUCK
During morning practice, Llumar Window Films had an incident identical to the SHelby/DYC problem yesterday. The prop broke in the Roostertail turn, ruining the strut and the 'shaft log' (aka stuffing box?) ... the tube on the bottom of the hull that the shaft goes through. No word yet if they'll try to repair it here, but I don't think they hurt the hull itself as much as the Shelby/DYC did.

BAD LUCK IN THE FINAL QUALIFYING SESSION
First Llumar blew something near the gearbox - hopefully not the box itself, then the Shelby/DYC was rounding the Roostertail turn when we heard a big crunch - they lost a blade on the prop and now have a hole at least a foot around in the bottom of the hull. They're looking at it now but are doubtful about being ready for the Saturday racing. There will be no qualifying on Saturday, testing only. The course is now officially closed.

The course is open to the Unlimiteds until 7 or 7:30pm. Llumar had a problem and is being towed back now. Znetix I, Shelby/DYC, and U-6 Tubby's Subs are ready to go out again.

Both Znetix boats were just out - Greg Hopp running very smooth on a calm Detroit River. U-6 and a DYC ready to go out after some debris is cleared from the course.

SESSION 2 UNDERWAY
Znetix I went out and ran in the mid 140's, followed by Mike Hanson in the U-9 Tubby's Subs with the fastest testing speeds yet - 154.1! Then U-9 had engine problems and he's been towed to the center of the course so that Miss Budweiser can go for their first run of the day.

FRIDAY NOON: Sorry for the delay, we had a little snag this morning.
The U-6 Miss Madison/Oh Boy! Oberto is here as well as the U-9 of Jones Racing.
A good number of boats were practicing and qualifying this morning, the Shelby/DYC team has that engine sorted out now and turned in a qualifying speed of just over 150MPH.

Marc (GDFATHA on the Powerboat List) is here too, and we're lookin' for ya Jack!
