*** MARK EVANS IN MISS ELAM PLUS WINS AT TRI-CITIES!!! - JULY 30
(Tri-Cities, WA) - Mark Evans in the Miss E-Lam Plus won the
fifth race of the Budweiser Unlimited Hydroplane Series at the
Budweiser Columbia Cup with Wings. Evans also won two
preliminary heats and outran the competition for the first
career victory for the Miss E-Lam Plus.
Evans victory ended the ten-race win streak that Miss Budweiser
driver Dave Villwock had over the last two seasons. Villwock
was the top qualifier in the field but had to withdraw from the
race after suffering major damage to the right sponson in the
second preliminary heat. As the Bud went through a roostertail
it appeared to collide with the U-9 which also withdrew from
the race. Everyone was OK and the U-9 damage was not severe.
George Stratton in the U-5 "Lowrey's Beef Jerky presents Appian
Jeronimo" finished second and Nate Brown in the U-6 Oh Boy!
Oberto Beef Jerky finished third.

The U-1 Miss Budweiser and the U-100 Znetix were side-by-side at
the start, but that didn't hold through the first turn. The
U-100 was unable to hold the lane and just about had a blowover
as it passed through Bud's roostertail. The U-16 Miss E-Lam Plus
took a big leap through the same turn. Coming out of the turn,
we had the U-1 followed by the U-9, the U-99, the U-6, the U-16,
the U-100, U-25. The Budweiser team certainly did their work for
the final. They were a little loose on the straightaway, but
overall looked very solid. As the U-1 stretched out a lead, the
U-9 Skyway Park Bowl & Casino presents Miss Go Bowling and the
U-99 Znetix present Llumar Window Film began a battle for
second. At the same time the U-16 Miss E-Lam Plus and the U-6
Oh Boy! Oberto Beef Jerky developed a battle of their own. This
second battle saw a couple back and forth lead changes during
laps two and three. The U-99 went down in turn two of lap three,
but was able to fire back up before the U-25 Miss Freei could
pass him.
Detroiter Mark Weber was uninjured after his flip in the York
during Heat 1A, and while the damage to the boat was reported to
be minor they were pretty well out of contention for the day.
