*** THE J. LEE SCHOENITH AWARD GOES TO ... GEORGE STRATTON!

This award goes to the driver with the fastest overall speed as a tribute to the original method of determining the Gold Cup winner. Usually this award goes to the same driver that won the Gold Cup, and we're so excited to see this award go to George Stratton (in his 'rookie' year in Unlimiteds) with the Appian Jeronimo at an overall speed of 136.260. Clap! Clap! Clap!

Dave's 1 lap penalty in heat 4B for an illegal lane change took him out of contention for this award. The winner of 4B was Detroiter Mark Weber in the Miss DYC / York / Shelby.

*** THE DAVID CZERWINSKI MEMORIAL RACE FOR GRAND PRIX HYDROS

Jean Theoret took first place in the memorial trophy race in memory of David Czerwinski (a member of the board of directors of Grand Prix racing) who passed away in January due to a snowmobile accident.

*** THE DEWALT "GUARANTEED TOUGH" CREWMEMBER OF THE RACE AWARD

Awarded to John Walters of the Appian Jeronimo team. Congratulations John! Surely the honor of the J. Lee Shoenith award extends to him as well.

*** RESULTS FOR ALL THE OTHER CLASSES

The official timing and scoring results for the rest of the classes will be posted on our web page soon, and we'll summarize them in our next SFO issue (also soon).

*** RECAP OF THE GOLD CUP FINAL

[By Chuck Moore @ www.hydros.org]
The sun came out as the boats took to the water for the Gold Cup. The U-10 York & Shelby Enterprises presents Miss DYC lined up in lane one, the U-16 Miss E-Lam Plus was in lane two, the U-1 Miss Budweiser was in lane three, the U-5 Appian Jeronimo was in lane four and the U-6 Miss Madison was in lane five. The U-2 Miss Chrysler Jeep served as the trailer.

It was a good start as the U-1 Miss Budweiser powered forward with the U-10 York & Shelby Enterprises presents Miss DYC following in close second. The U-5 Appian Jeronimo was just off the lead. The U-2 Miss Chrysler Jeep dueled with the U-6 Miss Madison for fourth.

The U-16 Miss E-Lam Plus went down prior to the start but was able to refire and run for a time. They went down a second time near the straightaway grandstand and did not make it back into the race.

On lap two the field began to line up with the U-1 in the lead and the U-10 about two roostertails back. The U-5 was back from the U-10 about one roostertail. The U-2 and the U-6 followed the lead pack. One moment of excitement involved the U-16. As Mark Evans sat in the U-16 the U-5 powered forward and had to make a right/left decision in a very short amount of time. George Stratton opted to take the U-5 on the outside and threaded the needle between the U-16 and the wall. It was so close it brought fans running down out of the stands to see if he made it.

From there the lead order didn't change. The U-2 and the U-5 were close and threatened a lead change in the fourth lap, but in the end it was the U-1 Miss Budweiser piloted by Dave Villwock that took the win.

The U-1 finished roughly three roostertails ahead of the U-10. The U-10 was well ahead of the U-5, but the U-2 was less than a roostertail off second. The U-6 finished back from the field.
